Blood Donation Tests?

I don't know if anybody's going to know this but: When you donate blood, what tests do they run on it before they'll declare it healthy enough to be used? I donated blood 2 months ago and I was told that it was healthy and free of disease and I was eligible to donate again, but to what extent does that mean I am healthy? Do they only test for AIDS and stuff? Or do they run like full tests to check the overall health of the donor and make sure there's no early signs of cancers, or other diseases? Just curious . Thanks in advance! :-)
Answer:
They are only testing for syphilis, HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), hepatitis and they check other factors in your blood such as blood count %26 iron. Just because your blood is acceptable, does NOT mean you are healthy and you should never ever give blood just to test for those diseases. HIV does not always show up right away and there are false positives and negatives and innocent lives pay for it such as my son who had his first blood transfusion at 4 weeks old during his 1st of 3 open heart surgeries. Donating blood will not screen for cancer or tell you if you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or a thyroid disorder. It won't tell you if you are risk for heart disease or high blood pressure. You should be checked out by a doctor and have a physical for those things.
Generally, just HIV, Hep and few others.
You're lucky that you can give blood, I'm on the black list, just because I live in England for 12 months during the mad cow time.
The above poster did NOT freak out on you. You are the one freaking out. He/She gave good and accurate information and YOU are the one who posed the question of whether or not your blood donation means you are healthy. If you don't like the answer, then don't ask the question. HE/SHE obviously understands the importance of blood donation and has an appreciation for it if he/she has a child depending on it. You asked what they test for, and the other posters answered it. You asked to what extend it meant you were healthy, and that question was answered too. Instead of being defensive about the answers you got, how about passing that info along when you run into a friend who you discover is using blood donation as a means to test for the HIV virus, it's good information even if it doesnt apply to you. Pehaps someone reading needed that answer, but you apparently only see an answer as it applies to you and do not fully realize the entire purpose of ByeDr.com. Grow up!
You just keep giving blood , I have given 38 pints that's not much but it helps to build more blood cells and will make you feel better , And yes they check for all possibilities as much as they can , Your doctor would check deeper good luck and keep giving blood every 56 or so days. hope this helps.
