Can damage to nerves of a tooth be repaired?

During an extraction the nerve of the adjacent tooth as damaged and exposed. Can we do anything to fix it, to mimimalize damage? Do we need to extract the tooth when the tooth has died?How long can it take for the tooth to die, will it hurt?

My wife had excruciating debilitating pain in her cheek due to a damaged nerve. The hard part was to get a correct diagnosis as it was mistaken to be a tooth problem for a long time. She was eventually referred to a neurologist who prescribed an anti-convusant, tegretol, for her condition. The tegretol has made life possible while the nerve heals. She has been on it for a long time since she has other jaw issues that are being addressed and every time they fuss with the other issues, it exacerbates the damaged nerve.I don't know if the dentist will be the right person to see, but perhaps he/she can refer you to a neurologist, who can prescribe the right medicine.
